Shibuya Station (Yamanote Line, Saikyo Line, Shonan Shinjuku Line, Toyoko Line, Denentoshi Line, Inokashira Line, Ginza Line, Fukutoshin Line, Hanzomon Line)

Around 3,000 yen and up, depending on the group. Two sets from 19:30. But check the starting time as it changes. On weekends, shows can be in the afternoon. Reservations online or by phone.

From the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station, pass Hachiko exit and head to the right of the Starbucks. The next large street to the left (can’t go right) is called Koen Dori. It’s a big street, and the club is about 100 meters up on the left. It’s under a church, though it doesn’t look like a traditional church. There’s a rather unimposing cross a couple of stories up on the wall. Look for a basement entrance with a small sign to the left and head down into the parking lot.

Not just near a parking lot, but actually inside a parking lot, Koen Dori Classics is an unusual place to hear jazz, but a great one. The venue is just the right size, and the managers are picky about who plays there. Only the most intriguing and unique artists ever play inside. It’s always cutting-edge and always unique.

Musicians from overseas are prominently featured, often playing together with Japanese musicians, so there’s a real sense of exchange. And a real sense of creating improvised music in unique combinations.

The venue does not have music every night, but when it does, it’s always stellar. From intense free improv to gentle Brazilian guitar to collaborations of all kinds, the club showcases an eclectic line-up of engaging musicians playing sometimes challenging but always satisfying music.

Seats are limited and ring around the stage, depending on how the performers set it up. But from wherever you are, you can hear and see well. The sound system is extremely good and always mixed with care.

Open seats are often limited, so it’s very important to book ahead. Most of the performers have their own mailing lists, and it can sell out even before it’s listed. There are standard drinks at the small counter, but not much food. That’s fine, though, since it’s in the middle of Shibuya, where it’s easy to find whatever food your heart desires.

Don’t be put off by having to walk through an underground parking garage. Just follow the signs and wave away the carbon monoxide and the club will appear at the bottom of the slope. The entryway is odd, but once inside, it’s a great venue to hear a fascinating selection of improvised music.
