After a short walk from Kunitachi Station, and an elevator to the top floor, the wall of vinyl and CDs inside No Trunks tells you right away that you’re in the right place. No Trunks is a delight of a club. It has perhaps the best food of any jazz spot in the city and certainly the most tasteful interior, with plants and paintings to balance with the wall of music on the other side.
You can hear really well in the club, with a good sound system that loses nothing wherever you sit. And you can see, as the club is one room, with a back bar and hidden-away kitchen. It also has some of the best drinks of any jazz club in the city. There’s a range of shochu, sake, wine, and whiskey, all well-curated and delivered just right.
While most of the live shows are only Friday and Saturday, other nights have up-and-coming performers and talks on jazz. The owner isn’t afraid to step out into other kinds of music, too. A dash of Brazilian, African, blues, rock, and world music find their way through his sound system on certain nights. Again, the music comes together in ways you might not expect but can always enjoy.
