There is a 1,500 yen music charge and a 500 yen table charge. There are two sets from 7:30, earlier on Sunday and public holidays.

A short train ride from Ikebukuro takes you to the lively, small station of Ekoda, which is quickly becoming a hub for music, food, and good times far from the rush and over-building of Ikebukuro. Salt Peanuts is one of the best additions to Ekoda’s vibe. Presenting the best of up-and-coming jazz musicians, the club focuses on music first, everything else second.

Drink choices have a wider range than most clubs, and the free snacks, including the club’s namesake, on every table are a welcome freebie. The club keeps prices reasonable, so customers never feel overcharged, and they feel free to keep coming back to hear groups they may not be sure about yet. Salt Peanuts is a joyous bargain in a city where quality is usually priced accordingly.

The club’s atmosphere is characterized by a sense of experimentation. It promotes younger players who have yet to break into the ranks of established players, but it also features the most established musicians.

The club is a club, instead of a performance hall, a place where musicians still have the freedom to try things out, push their limits, and gauge the reaction of the audience. The atmosphere is generally younger, friendlier, and more switched on to straight-ahead music.

Salt Peanuts, of course, is the perfect name for the club. It comes from the fast-paced, amusing song Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker made famous. That sense of intense devotion to jazz infuses the club. It’s a comfortable place, a bit bigger than most clubs, where you can go for the music and linger to unwind, but you can be assured of getting a great evening of jazz.
